How many lights can you set up in a single room? As many as you want, as long as you can handle the heat load. You can put 4,000 watts over a 4×8 area, or ten 400s over a 4×8 area if you could handle the heat.
Sunlight is the equivalent of approximately 5,000 watts over a 5×5 area–hugely intense and powerful. Traditionally a 1,000-watt bulb in a vertical mount could lightly cover as large as an 8×8 area. Is that performance gardening? Not really. In general, we’re going to want to hit a 4×4 area with 1,000 watts, a 3×3 area with 600 watts.
As you keep these things in mind, you probably can come up with a decent lighting layout for your garden. However, it is recommend going to your local hydroponics store and speak with a professional who can coach you in the correct direction for your particular circumstance.
